As a Holistic Nutritionist, I am passionate about teaching both men and women how to regain and maintain their reproductive health so they can have healthy babies. As part of what I teach them is how toxic chemicals have a major impact on their over-all health and their ability to pass on their good health to their children.
When I was pregnant I thought I knew what it meant to be healthy and I thought that as long as I drank a lot of milk and didn't drink alcohol or smoke then I was good. I wish I knew then what I know now! I may have been able to at least lessen the severity of their allergies and asthma.
I did the best that I could at the time but I can now help other women do better for their children.
Most people don't realize that the average woman uses 12 personal care products or cosmetics each and every day, allowing her skin, mouth, and lungs to absorb an average of 168 chemicals that may have toxic affects in her body. 80% of conventional body products contain the top 10 toxic chemicals.
Most of these chemicals don't break down and they accumulate in our bodies.
Many industrial and agricultural chemicals disrupt our endocrine system functions. and that is why they are actually called endocrine-disrupting chemicals. We have hormones and glands in our body and together they make up our endocrine system which plays a major role in regulating mood, growth and development, metabolism, sexual function and reproductive processes.
Pregnant mothers, babies and children are the ones that are the most vulnerable to these chemicals. The processes that govern reproductive health are most active in these groups and can be permanently damaged by these chemicals.
One of the most well researched examples of these chemicals is Bishpenol A also known as PBA which is a chemical; commonly used in plastics. It can disrupt hormone function in both men and women and can accumulate in out fatty tissue for decades.
PBA is widely used in water bottles, cash register receipts and as a lacquer to coat the inside of most food cans.
More than 150 peer-reviewed studies have found negative health effects from exposure to PBA which include;
Reduced fertility for both men and women
Higher risk of miscarriages in pregnancy
Increased risk of cancer
Obesity and diabetes
Development problems in children
Do you see why I am so passionate about this!!!
Did you know there is no law in North America that requires manufacturers to disclose the FULL list of ingredients in their products? Although there are symbols to warn us about acute hazards, there is no requirement to warn about chronic health and environmental hazards.
Wow, what a lot of doom and gloom, right!!! Honestly, I'm not trying to scare you, I'm only trying to wake you up to the facts and light some passion in you to take actions needed to protect yourself and your family!
I'm here to help you!
The first thing you need to do is make sure you are properly eliminating waste from your body so that toxins can actually get out of your body as quickly as possible. If you are not having healthy and regular poops, you need to make this a priority for your health. You can learn more about this and constipation in my blog, CLICK HERE.
It's so important!
Let me put it this way, imagine your gut is like a bathtub. You are washing all the toxins and dirt out of your bathtub BUT the plug is still in so the toxins have no way to get out. Would then bathe in that water? Ewww, gross!! Of course not!!!!! You wouldn't want to put those toxins back inside your body. Well that's what's happening in your gut when when you are constipated. Not only are these chemicals not getting out of your body, you are reabsorbed those toxins and they are going back into your blood stream. This is also true for hormones. Anyone have PMS? Do you get constipated? There is a connection between the two.
Another way you can protect yourself and your family is to limit your exposure to industrial and agricultural chemicals. I would strongly encourage you to educate yourself about the products you are eating and using every day. Check out the resources at the end of this blog to find sources for your reference.
One of the easiest and most impactful things you can do to protect yourself is to use toxin-free body-care and home cleaning products. There are a wide selection of toxin-free products on the market but I caution you to be diligent in your choices as word like "pure", "healthy" and "all natural" are marketing words and they are not words that will protect you from toxic products.
Download the free Think Dirty App. It's so easy to you on your smart phone. Using the camera on your phone you line it up with the UPC code on the product and within seconds you get a rating of your beauty product. It's also very helpful when you are buying products in a store, no more guessing or trying to make sense of all of those ingredients you can't pronounce.
I hope I have ignited passion within you to get informed about the toxic chemicals you use everyday so you can learn how to protect yourself and your family. Please feel free to leave questions or comments below. I would love to hear from you, I'm here to help.
